. this morning the search for a new brief in san jose is about to hit second gear. the first of four community meetings gets under way today where city leaders hope to get feedback from local neighborhoods on what they want in a new chief. damian trujillo is live at the berryessa community center where the first of the meetings will be held tonight. damian, good morning. you're already hearing about some possible candidates for the job? >> reporter: yeah, we hear about a couple of people who might be interested in applying for the police chief position. i'm give you those names in just a bit. this meeting tonight is at 6:30. no one is denying that fixing this ship or righting this ship is going to be an easy task. the new chief will have to deal with lower morale and a dwindling budget, so it will be a tough task. a few months ago chris moore announced he'd be retiring by january 31st. he leaves a department that is nowhere near the staffing levels he feels are needed to keep the city and his officers safe. the new chief will have to come in and play a political card game basically, working wi

-fire agreement coming up in a few moments. first, new out of the south bay. a deadly hit-and-run in east san jose has police at this hour searching for answers. according to police, a man was hit by two vehicles after 6:00 a.m. while crossing alum rock avenue. we have bob redell on the scene this morning. he has more details on what is happening out there. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. we spoken with a local neighborhood group who does not think this was a fluke. thinks this latest fatality here at alum rock avenue is a symptom of the problems on the road. they are not surprised a person has been hit and killed. this is the third pedestrian to be hit and killed in east san jose. the ninth person when you take into account the entire city of east san jose. the man, that is all we know, was jay walking after 6:00 this morning while it was still dark out and most likely raining. he was attempting to cross alum rock and was 75 feet away from the nearest crosswalk when the car ran into him. the car did speed off and did not stop or return. the police are looking for the driver. it

first thought. he was hurt while battling appear apartment fire in san jose and he remains in the hospital this morning. the damage was done at the apartment complex on willowleaf road. christie smith joins us with the latest on the fire captain's condition. good morning, christie ir. >> reporter: good morning to you. i finally spoke with a fire captain on scene. he said a chance to speak to that injured firefighter and he's still in good spirits, still feeling some pain, though. he was injured when a section of ceiling collapsed on him and he was actually trapped under that for just a little while. there is still a crew here on fire watch this morning. there was some concern still about the stability of the burned building. it was burned so badly and they sprayed so much water on it, that's where the concern is coming from. it started around 8:30 last night at this townhome complex on willowleaf drive. it took about three hours for firefighters to knock the flames down. when they arrived, they say flames were pouring through the roof and spreading through the attic. 18 peo

very quickly. by 9:00 a.m. just a little spotty activity south of san jose. by noon today almost completely clear over the greater bay area from the showers and we're also talking about sunshine at that point from santa rosa down to san mateo. still mostly cloudy until about 2:00 p.m. in san jose but we're going to see a nice, sunny finish to the day and highs will be in the upper 60s and low 70s everywhere across the bay area. traffic and weather go hand in hand. let's check on the morning commute with mike inouye. >> mostly cloudy and we're hearing mostly crowdy over at the toll plaza where we have the wet roads. look at that, the water kicks up some of the leftovers from last night's rain. there is the slow at the toll plaza. the map shows you it is moving smoothly but the yellow spots just below 60. i'm going to overlay some weather data. the green here you may have slicker conditions like the bay bridge toll plaza. this is west 580 into livermore, the earlier accident and two accidents reported have both completely cleared from the roadway. a lot of folks headed toward the d

area where there is no visibility. you've got 200 feet in parts of the bay area. this is san jose where it's completely clear for now. but what i'm noticing is you're also dropping off from 10 to 8 miles over the past ten minutes and we'll drop off throughout the morning hours. right now the fog is the thickest right at the mouth of the delta in fairfield. also napa, santa rosa, up and down the peninsula, you'll encounter deep pockets of fog, especially once you get past 92. that's where it starts to thicken up in particular so take it easy and get ready to tap the brakes. it's the entire central valley that is socked in with fog. by 8:00 a.m. still dealing with a fair amount of cloud cover but overall looking good by 1:00 p.m. the warmest day of the week. the rain arrives, lots of rain on the way towards the bay area as we head throughout the second half of the week. first let's see how that fog is impacting your drive. it is impacting your drive this morning. good morning, mike. >> it's impacting my report as well because this is the san mateo bridge. i wanted to show it to you. i can

in san jose. it broke out at the kimberly woods complex on willowleaf drive. that is where christie smith joins us live with more on the captain's condition and the damage to that apartment complex. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. i just spoke with the captain on scene here in san jose and he said that that firefighter will be kept overnight for observation. he said that he was hurt when falling sheetrock actually hit him, but i wanted to show you what the scene looks like here this morning. a crew is still here on fire watch. they're telling me there is concern about the stability of the building from the fire and all the water that they actually poured on it overnight. this is a three-alarm fire that displaced 18 people. a firefighter just told me when they got heres are flames were huge. they were pouring out of the building and most residents were already outside, but it damaged six units. two of them completely uninhabitable. it took them three hours to knock this down. residents in neighboring units had to evacuate while this was going on. captain ron brown ju

had just returned from war. bob redell joins us live in san jose with more. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. we have spoken with the father of allan devillena from here in san jose and he tells us and he thinks that his 22-year-old son would not have started a confrontation with police. he says he knew better. the family has already left their home here in san jose for palm springs where their son was shot and killed by police early saturday morning. it was two bicycle cops responding to loud voices in a parking garage in downtown. they recognized devillena from an earlier drunken public incident. when they ordered him and his passenger out of the car, the marine drove off. police fired their weapons, hitting and killing devillena. >> after we collect the witness statements, the statements from the officers involved and the evidence at the scene, we'll have a better determination of what actually occurred, what was occurring in the minds of the officers and what led them to use their weapons in this incident. >> reporter: devillena's friend was not h

your drive. christina has the forecast. we'll start off, however, with bob redell live in san jose with a look at how the south bay right now is getting set for the next round of rain and wind. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. not only a second but a third storm as well. we have two more storms that are going to be hitting the bay area. one the first one will be hitting the north bay this afternoon and slowly will be making its way down here to the south bay lingering until saturday afternoon. then it's around that time that this third storm will be coming and it will be going on until sunday. christina loren will have more information on that. of course with these storms will be bringing more rain. you add on top of that the rain received yesterday. the ground will become more saturated. the question is will you need to be piggicking up sand bags. if you live in an area florida t that floods, the answer is yes. if you live on a street that drains slowly, that could be an issue because we're going to be getting hit with back-to-back storms. in places like s

ahead of the front. as the front pulls out of the bay area, we have strong winds sustained in san jose at 18 miles per hour. east-southeast at 12 1/2 miles. the gusts are what could catch you off guard if you're headed over the open water bridges or the mountains. expect in the higher elevations up to 70 miles per hour. it's going to be a very dangerous commute. for most part, the lighter rain is still coming down. the heavier rain is off shore. it's just minutes away from places like half-moon bay. about 30 minutes away from san bruno. it will hit the east bay in about 50 minutes. get ready for that. grab that umbrella, grab the jacket. ladies, don't even bother doing your hair today because it's not going to hold up. mostly cloudy conditions. we kick off your rush hour. that will continue until about 10:00 a.m. those wind advisories stay put till 11:00 a.m. we're going to see some partial breaks. we'll see partial sunshine out there. i think it's going to be mostly cloudy and kind of cool. we get our next heavy round of moisture tomorrow. wednesday, the most active time period. storm

san jose to explain what happened in the shooting of a marine in san jose in palm springs. >> reporter: well, this marine attended piedmont high school here in san jose his sophomore and junior here and then transferred out. are calling this a tragedy. here is picture of him. 22 years old. he was stationed out of 29 palms. police in palm springs say two bicycle officers heard yelling in a parking garage and when they entered, they recognized him and his marine friend from a public intoxication from earlier that night and the men started to yell derogatory comments. one of the officers reached in the car. >> the suspect accelerated directly toward the other officer. >> reporter: the officers both fired their weapons and shot him which resulted in his death. the passenger was uninjured. the marine's family told me on the phone he's a good man who served in afghanistan. they say what police is describing is completely out of character. there's an american flag and patriotic stickers. neighbors say the family was also -- the family was always proud of him. >> you think you ar

of the bridges for quite a while. this is san jose. we sent photographers out, this is one o of the clear spots. let's go to the map. here's that fog we've been talking about, this is across the golden gate bridge, a little bit slow right now on the approach between 580 and the toll plaza. you can see the headlights there. this is back to work after a while for some folks. if you're heading toward ffo, this is what it looks like on 101. past campbell, it looks okay as far as accidents, no major road work to slow you down. 280 is pretty quiet as well. interstate 80, they have issued a dense fog advisory for the carcinas bridge. particularly when you get a little bit further north heading toward vacaville, davis, cp noticed it's especially thick in spots there. milpitas, 880, coming around that bend, so far so good out toward san jose. that is a check of the time saver traffic. >>> the numbers this morning, we're starting out at least a little bit warmer than we have lately because with the low clouds acts as a blanket, in the low 50s in oakland, and in the headlines we'll be looking at the fog t

and the update on the investigation there to the case. >> reporter: yeah. i checked in with the san jose police department spokesperson for the update on this case. they are still search for a second suspect or at least that's what was happening all this week as they released a sketch on that expect now hee mailed me back and said per the homicide unit we aren't confirming or denying any new information. that came after i asked them if an arrest had been made. >> the man was shot and killed last week. one of the suspects a 26-year- old was in court wednesday. police say he and another man robbed four businesses, murdered a 22-year-old in a carjacking and participated in a shoot out with two officers one of the officers was hit and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. willbanks was arrested the next morning. officers released a sketch of the second suspect, a 20,000- dollar reward is being offered for his arrest. the funeral for the victim is being held this morning at 11. we will continue to talk to police and ask them about updates on that second suspect and bring you new information on
